Plastics
Patented fibre technology developed by Zelfo Technology transforms 100% renewable or recycled cellulose fibres and water into self-binding Zelfo® material.
With unprecedented environmental, performance and design attributes, Zelfo is an economic, adaptable and sustainable alternative to wood, plastics and other materials for 2D and 3D applications in industrial and automotive components, packaging and consumer products.
The original research and development programme was designed to convert Zelfo into a self-binding board material for flooring, wall paneling and furniture. This work has indicated that both the Zelfo material and Cellulose Optimization Resource Efficient (CORE) technology could have other uses. Zelfo Technology is currently exploring the potential for Zelfo within plastics.
Enhanced Performance with a Bio-Based Sustainable Material
Zelfo may serve as an additive to or matrix for bio-based or conventional plastics, enhancing performance and reducing non-renewable material content. Solutions for plastics are currently under review to create customized Zelfo compounds to meet performance requirements.
Zelfo provides the potential to upcycle fibre-based waste, can be recycled into new Zelfo material and is biodegradable. The patented Cellulose Optimization Resource Efficient (CORE) technology provides an extremely energy- and water-efficient processing method to transform fibre and water into self-binding Zelfo.
Zelfo’s Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) varies by application, but its source materials, production processes and end-of-life disposal have a low carbon footprint and environmental impact.
Zelfo Technology’s U.S.-based partners are introducing Zelfo-based products for certification by the U.S. Government’s BioPreferred Program.
